Puckzilla came out hot and captured a 3-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the game. Lead by #91 -- who completed his hat trick with just under two minutes remaining in the first, Puckzilla was up 4-0 going into the final minute. With time running down, Chuck Gehring fed a pass to Mark Vis behind the net. Mark managed to toss the puck out front and into the goalie's pads where it deflected in for the score.
Early in the second, Andrew Cushman drove to the net scoring his 4th goal of the season and narrowing the lead to 4-2. Three minutes later, #9 threw a tough angle shot on goal. It appeared that Caveman had it stopped, but the referee signalled that the puck had crossed the line giving Puckzilla another 3 goal lead. With 3:36 left in the second, the rough stuff started. #34 was called for rouging and the Puck'n A was on its third power play of the night and 11th of the season. It took nearly the entire two minutes before Bob Cushman scored the teams first power play goal, closing the gap to 5-3 with another period to play.
Puck'n A tightened up the defence and Caveman made a couple of excellent glove saves. Finally at the 10-minute mark the Puck'n A struck again. Mark Vis dug the puck out of the near boards and threw a cross court pass to Chuck Gehring at the top of the circle. Chuck skated it in and fed Mitch Wright, breaking into the slot, with a perfect pass which was quickly one-timed into the back of the net. This was Mitch's team leading 5th goal of the season and it narrowed the lead to just a single goal.
At 7:07 the game degraded. Al Lessa and Puckzilla's #91 were ejected from the game for unsportsman-like conduct. The game was starting to become more physical and tempers were flaring. Less than 2 minutes later Puckzilla's #34 picked up a double minor -- two minutes each for interference and unsportsman-like conduct. Unfortunately, Chuck Gehring also picked up a two minute unsportsman-like conduct penalty as well for arguing with the referee.
The final five and a half minutes were not without it's share of excitement. Puckzilla managed to bank a shot down nearly three quarters of the court only to have the puck pass an unaware caveman and go off the right post. The Puck'n A wasn't without it's share of opportunity. Mitch Wright broke in and fired a shot on goal -- saved by the goalie. Bob Hunter, breaking in on the play picked up the rebound and missed a nearly open net.
Bob Cushman also had an excellent opportunity bounce off of the post. His arms were raised in celebration as the CLANK rang out signally another bad bounce for the 1-4-0 Puck'n A.
