Despite a career high 4 goal game by Mitch Wright, the Puck'n A suffered their second straight loss at the hands of the Penguins.
Tom Bondur (#72) started the scoring just under 5 minutes into the game and Al Lessa followed up with his 4th of the season just one minute later to give the Puck'n A an early 2-0 lead. The Penguins then struck back quickly. Just 30 seconds after Lessa's goal, the Pens made it 2-1.
With about 5 minutes left in the first, Mitch Wright took a pass from Mark Vis to increase the lead to 3-1. He then followed it up with an unassisted tally just over a minute later to put the Puck'n A into a commanding 4-1 lead.
Little more than 3 minutes into the 2nd period the Penguins began their comeback with a burst of 2 goals in a matter of 2 minutes to narrow the lead (4-3). Another two goals in two minutes outburst started with little over 5 minutes remaining in the period -- both goals assisted by the Penguins #12. Closing out the second period, Mitch Wright broke into the offensive zone taking his shot and then picking up his own rebound for an unassisted goal -- the game tying goal, and his third of the night.
The third period started with both teams posturing for position, just waiting for the other side to make a mistake. Finally, #35 of the Penguins takes a pass from #1 (1 goal, 2 assists) and slipped the puck past and outstretched goalie to give the Penguins the lead. With the Puck'n A pressuring, the Penguins managed to increase their lead to 7-5 with 3 minutes remaining.
Although they were down by 2 goals, the Puck'n A kept the pressure on. With under 15 seconds left, Bob Cushman won a faceoff in the right faceoff circle. He quickly flipped a pass over to Mitch Wright who was heading to the net. Mitch batted the fluttering puck into the goal and quickly called a time out. With only 10 seconds left, the Puck'n A pulled Ron ``Caveman'' Steele from the net for the extra attacker and the drama was set. On came Bondur, Lessa, Wright, Vis, and Cushman. Unfortunately, before they could manage to take control of the puck, the horn sounded, and the upset was in the books.
Next week, the Puck'n A take on the Enforcers in a crucial division game.
