With only two lines, the Puck'n A put up a good fight for over 2 and a half periods by holding a 2-1 lead off of goals by Al Lessa and Andrew Cushman. At the 13:29 mark of the 2nd period, fatigue set in and the Jackals scored two quick goals to close out the period and take a 3-2 lead. Not surprisingly, two additional members of the Jackals showed up for the game late around this time.
The short intermission wasn't enough to hold back the tide as midway through the third, the Jackals notched goals 4 and 5 to take a commanding 3 goal lead with just under six minutes left.
As the end neared, the Puck'n A got the first powerplay of the game, but was unable to convert before being called for a penalty themselves with 36 seconds remaining.
The game was much closer than the 5-2 final score indicates. Much of the credit goes to the Puck'n A's goalie Ron "Caveman" Steele for making a much needed 27 saves, three of which were on clear odd-man rushes.
Next time these two teams meet, expect an even better contest as the Puck'n A's leading defenseman (Chuck Gehring) should be back in the lineup after suffering a torn muscle. To give credit where credit is due, despite being only 2 weeks into the season, the Jackals are the team to beat!
