"We didn't want to ride in the stink'n carriage any way", chuckled Bob Cushman, as the Puck'n A's Cinderella run through the playoffs came to a tragic end. As Scott Gehring said just before the game ended, "We played well, lets hold our heads high and finish it out" and the team responded. Despite being down 7-3 with under two minutes to play, team captain Mitch Wright pulled the goalie hoping to draw the score a bit closer. It worked as Scott Gehring scored with just 29 seconds left to play.
The first half of the first period was a hard fought battle, but when the scoring gates opened, the pucks hit the twine in numbers. In about a six minute span, the Enforcers netted 4 goals and had the Puck'n A literally wobbling on their skates. Bob Cushman closed out the first just seconds after that flurry by putting a Scott Gehring pass behind the Enforcers' netminder to bring back the hope.
The second period became another battle. The Puck'n A defence held the Enforcers to no goals while scoring one themselves. Al Lessa slapped one in and closed the gap to 4-2. The anticipation of a comeback was clearly in the air. The Puck'n A, having defeated both the #1 and #3 seeds in the tournament were notorious for the dramatic.
Knowing full well what needed to be done, the Enforcers opened the period with an early goal (15:21) and a second six minutes later. "That first goal in the third was a back breaker.", said Mitch Wright, "If we could have gotten the first goal of the third, I think we could have taken them". The Puck'n A netted two goals in the period, but it wasn't quite enough.
But there is always next season... and it starts April 3rd.
