The saga of cinderella continues. The Puck'n A pull a second round upset by defeating the #3 seed Puckzilla in a hard fought 4-3 battle. For the second straight playoff game, Bob Cushman knocked in a pair of goals to lead the team to victory. Scott Gehring had the eventual game winner at 10:18 of the third where he literally went coast to coast and flipping one by a surprised goaltender.
Ron Caveman Steele was solid in net for the second straight game making numerous saves as the game wound down. "I don't think I could have saved another one", said a worn out Steele. Steele's regular season GAA was a whopping 5.78, but in the playoffs it has dropped to 3.50 despite playing both the #1 and #3 seeds in the tournament.
Bob Cushman opened the scoring and Al Lessa put another one by giving the Puck'n A a 2-1 first period lead. Puckzilla tied it up early in the second only to have Bob Cushman (again) give his team the single goal lead. Scott Gehring then turned on the jets and carried the puck the length of the floor snapping one by the netminder creating an important two goal lead.
The proverbial shit hit the fan at the 4:24 mark of the third.
Puckzilla's Sardo (#34) took a run at Chuck Gehring knocking him flat and
keeping him down for several minutes. Sardo recieved a five minute major
and a game misconduct, but not before the younger Gehring made a run for
the cheapshot artist. Scott was held back by the referee and several players,
but was tossed with a game misconduct despite his unsuccessful attempt.
After gaining his senses, Chuck, too, became outraged and was looking for
a little revenge. Chuck was briskly escorted from the surface and asked to
remain in the locker room for the remainder of the game. The referee stated
that it was not an ejection, but because of concern for the players well being.
A crock if you ask this writer.
Play continued with the Puck'n A's enjoying a 4-3 man advantage, but Puckzilla's "go to" guy (#91) managed to weave through traffic and narrow the score to 4-3 with a little over a minute left. Another faceoff and #91 was off again. The defense held. Ron Steele made some key saves and the Puck'n A won critical faceoffs to hold of the onslaught.
The Puck'n A shocked the DIHA crowd for the second straight week and have earned their first championship game birth. The will take on the Enforcers on Saturday, March 22 at 3pm. Much like Raider games, this game will not be televised locally.
