Midway through overtime, the Puck'n A's Bob Cushman tips a lose puck into the net giving his team a birth in the second round of the DIHA tournament.
The Jackals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game, and it appeared the #1 seed Jackals were going to dominate the #6 seed Puck'n A as many would have expected.... Except the Puck'n A. Midway through the first, Chuck Gehring scored his second goal of the season and first of the playoffs to narrow the lead to 2-1.
Opening the second period, the Puck'n A came out strong, scoring 2 goals only 30 seconds apart (16:32 and 16:02) to allow the lead to change hands for the first time of the evening. Andrew Cushman notched the first on a feed from rookie defenseman Juan Castillo while the second was an unassisted effort by the elder Cushman -- Bob. Andrew and Bob are the first father/son pair on the team. The other being Scott and Chuck Gerhing.
It didn't take long, and the Jackals tied the game up at three goals a piece at 9:45. Not to be outdone, four minutes later Chuck Gehring scored his second of the evening to regain the lead. Shortly thereafter, Chuck got another 2 -- minutes that is in the penalty box for tripping. The crowd (ok, the players bench) boo'ed the call.
The third period was a hard fought battle, but the Jackals overcame some excellent defensive work and tied the game at four. After several flurries on both ends, the game ended in a tie. Dry Ice rules state that if a playoff game is tied, there will be a 5 minute sudden death overtime, followed by a 4 man shoot-out if necessary.
With the stage set for the dramatic, the puck was dropped and the pressure was on. Excellent chances where thwarted by both netminders until the 2:30 mark where Bob Cushman became the evenings hero. Bob jumped on a loose puck and chipped it over a diving goaltender for the dramatic upset. A cinderella story in the making...
