The Puck'n A finally managed to put togeather a 3 game win streak by topping the Penguins I by the final score of 5-0. Ron Caveman Steele was out of the lineup tonight and taking his places was Marty Seguin. Also out of the lineup were defenseman Al Lessa with a strained knee, Scott Gehring was stuck at work, and Bob Hunter managed to get there twice -- once without his equipment and a second time with 9 minutes left but opted not to play. Tom Bondur is on the "Just Missing" list. We'll get the milk cartons out as soon as possible. Finally, Mark Vis had a pre-excused absense [snicker].
The first period sort of drug on with neither team able to put the puck into the net. The horn finally sounded 23 seconds into the 2nd when Chuck Gehring put a long shot down on goal and the Penguins defense and goalie had a slight miscommunication which allowed Mitch Wright to scoop up the lose puck and put it into an empty net. This was the eventual game winner.
Just under the 10 minute mark Chuck Gehring netted his fifth goal of the season giving the Puck'n A a much desired two goal lead. It didn't stop there as nearly two minutes later Mitch Wright broken in on goal, showed the forehand and slipped a backhand past the Penguins netminder on the stick side.
It took another 4 minutes or so before Bob Cushman got his goal for the evening. Bob took a pass from Chuck Gehring just outside the faceoff circle, drew the puck back and fired it on the near post side. You could hear ring as the puck hit the post and went in. The Puck'n A now had a commanding 4-0 lead when Chuck Gehring put the final nail in the coffin at 2:23.
The third period had both teams dragging. The Penguins I were clearly looking to avoid the shutout, but Marty Seguin held his position and held on for the win. The Puck'n A's record is now 5-3-0 for 10 points. A win or tie next week against the Lightning should guarantee them their second straight playoff bid and a chance to get to the big dance again.
