Mitch Wright and Scott Gehring each had hat tricks as the Puck'n A routed the Penguins II by the score of 11-4 in their Spring 1997 season opener.
The scoring opend quickly as Mitch Wright scored 2 goals 1:04 seconds giving the Puck'n A a quick two goal lead before the midway point of the first period. Scott Gehring notched his first of three at the 9:08 mark and Mitch Wright followed up netting his 3rd of the period at 6:12 by slipping a backhand shot past the goalie to close out the first period scoring.
The second period started out with more of the same. Scott Gehring put in his second of the evening just two minutes into the period. Fifty seconds later Mitch Wright grabbed a loose puck from behind the net and brought it around the net putting it in just inside the far post to give the Puck'n A a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Penguins II finally managed to put the biscuit past Caveman to take away the shutout at 12:21 left in the second and later put another one by at 7:44. Not to be out done, Chuck Gehring scored his first of the season and followed it up three minutes later with this second, again giving the Puck'n A a 6 goal lead. The Penguins II responded by netting their third of the period cutting the lead to 5..
Things slowed down a bit in the third. There was only ten minutes left before Scott Gehring nailed down his hat trick by taking a beautiful pass from Andrew Cushman. Andrew later scored his first of the season unassisted giving him a pair of points for the evening and putting him ahead in the Cushman scoring race as his father Bob Cushman was held pointless for the first time since game 1 of the 1997 Winter season (in 10 games).
The Penguins II scored their final goal of the game with just under two minutes remaining, however, the Puck'n A countered with a tally with just 37 seconds left as Mark Vis threw a loose puck into the crease and it rebounded off one of the Penguins skates and into the net. The bounces were clearly going the Puck'n A's way this game. ABOUT TIME!
Next week the Puck'n A face the Flyers.
